How to Book China High-Speed Train Tickets as a Foreigner (2026)

Normal mode⏱ 8 min✔ Last verified 18 October 2026

Short answer: Book on the official China Railway 12306 app (no fee, but registration and foreign cards can be fiddly) or on Trip.com (English, easier card checkout, same fares). Tickets open 15 days before departure. Tickets are paperless — your passport is your ticket. Arrive 30–45 minutes early.

  1. Download “China Railway 12306” (publisher: China Railway Information Technology Center). Avoid lookalike apps.
  2. Register: Me → Register, scan your passport to auto-fill. Your name must match your passport exactly.
  3. Verify your passport, phone (international numbers work) and email. Do this days before you need to book — verification can take up to ~24 hours.
  4. Search your route and date, choose a seat class (Second, First or Business), add yourself as the passenger.
  5. Pay within 30 minutes with a card, Alipay or WeChat Pay, or the seat is released.

Search the route in the Trains section, enter your passport details exactly as printed, and pay by card. Trip.com books the same 12306 tickets and the order shows up as a paperless ticket linked to your passport.

  • Tickets open 15 days before departure.
  • Popular routes (Beijing–Shanghai, Shanghai–Hangzhou, Guangzhou–Shenzhen) and public holidays (early May, early October, Chinese New Year) sell out fast — book the day they open.
  • If your train is sold out, try a different departure time, a nearby station (e.g. Shanghai Hongqiao vs Shanghai station), or join the waitlist on 12306.
  1. Arrive 30 minutes early (45 at big hubs like Beijing South or Shanghai Hongqiao).
  2. Station entry: show your passport. Some self-service gates accept passports; if not, use the staffed lane.
  3. Security check: no lighters, knives or oversized power banks.
  4. Find your gate on the screens (train number + gate number), then scan your passport at the platform gate or use the manual lane.
  5. Boarding closes about 3–5 minutes before departure. If you miss it, you can’t board.
